We chose to remain silent
As we stood staring out of the window
Watching the house, we loved so much
Go up in flames.

Certificates, photographs, gifts
And memories that held sentimental value
Crumbled bit by bit
Into dust and ashes
Underneath the smoke
That blurred images of
Empty eyes
That now felt hollow
As the salvage of all things priceless
was being deduced to numbers.

In that moment of silence
We pondered over
The distance that remained
Between the two of us
Or the one we failed to cover
When things and feelings
Spiralled out of control
If sometimes
The price we pay
To save ourselves
Comes at a cost of
Losing everything
We once had.
